Recap

After defeating the shade on the third floor, the party opened the last guest room and found the second warm black-gold shard hidden beneath a folded blanket. The room was covered in scratches from people who had tried to escape, but every mark stopped at the thresholds.

When the shard was claimed, another memory struck. The hallway filled with panic. Guests were trapped behind their doors. Keys bent, locks turned, and doors opened only into the same hallway again and again. Oren, the innkeeper, stood with his ledger, shouting room numbers and unpaid debts while the house whispered:

Guests stay.

The party climbed to the fourth floor, where the tavern's records waited: ledgers, debt cabinets, an Unsettled Account Box, and a hidden bookshelf door that needed a coin-shaped inlay and the right account language. Opening the box awakened a storm of pages, ledgers, names, debts, and ink. After the fight, the party recovered the missing coin inlay, several bent keys, and a strange blackened copper coin.

Behind the hidden bookshelf, the party found Oren's deeper records. Oren had bought a strange black-gold relic at a market and called it the Coiled Coin. At first, it helped him. Doors obeyed. Locks answered. Guests who tried to leave without paying could not get out.

Then the help became hunger. The house remembered what belonged to it, who owed it, and who had not paid. Something beneath the tavern answered the Coiled Coin, and four pale lines of warding light split the relic into four pieces: one to the hearth, one to the guest rooms, one to the attic, and one below.

The party climbed to the attic, where the tavern had stored what it had taken. Boots, letters, purses, toys, rings, keys, coats, cups, ledgers, and guest names filled the hoard. The hoard stirred and formed around Blackpenny, the man Oren had become inside the house's hunger. When the echo fell, the third shard became available.

The party then descended below the house. In the basement, they found an old locked cell, warnings scratched where warnings should not have been, and the final shard near the old power beneath the tavern.

When the final shard was claimed, the four pieces called to each other. Their broken edges turned inward, and for one breath the warmth did not feel possessive. It felt whole.

But the house did not want to let go.

The old altar beneath the tavern woke and tried to reject the forming relic. The house screamed through every lock, coin, and chain:

Not whole. Not free. Mine.

Pale ward-light and black-gold house-magic twisted together. The old altar tried to cast the relic out. The house tried to keep it. The two powers hardened into a hulking guardian with the forming gem pulsing in its chest.

That is where the session ended.

What The Party Knows Now

  • The black-gold relic was called the Coiled Coin.
  • Oren bought it at a market.
  • At first, it helped him protect and control the tavern.
  • It slowly turned ownership into obsession.
  • Something old beneath the tavern reacted to the Coiled Coin.
  • That force split the relic into four shards.
  • Reuniting the shards woke both the house and the altar.
  • The relic may be whole again, but the Silent Coin is not ready to release it.

Next Session

The party is in the basement. The completed black-gold relic is inside the chest of a guardian made from house-hunger and old ward-light.

The house wants to keep it.

The altar wants to reject it.

The party is standing between them.
